GLOBAL POPULATION
POPULATION GROWTH AN UNADDRESSED CRISIS

During my lifetime world population has increased by more than 5 billion people!

Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
The potential for really good management of the global socio-enviro-economic system is better now than at any point in history up to this time ... but it is far from being realized.

There are many reasons for this that I will try to explain elsewhere ... but not here and now. Hear what I want to highlight about the issue of global population growth over the course of my lifetime.
  • I was born in 1940 when the world population was estimated to be around 2.3 billion
  • 80 years later in 2020 the population was estimated to be 7.8 billion and has now exceeded 8 billion.
  • The population has been growing at the rate of around 800 million every decade for the past 4 decades!

Peter Burgess
There is no concrete data for any year prior to 1950, but it's estimated by many that the world population was somewhere around 2.3 billion in 1940 when I was born, up from around 2 billion in 1930.

The world reached 1 billion in 1804

The world population was 1.6 billion in 1900

In 1950, most estimates put the world's population as somewhere near 2.5 billion.

The world population reached 6.14 billion in 2000

World population growth during my lifetime has been as follows:
  • 1940 to 1950 2.3 --> 2.5 ... 200 million
  • 1950 to 1960 2.5 --> 3.03 ... 470 million
  • 1960 to 1970 3.03 --> 3.69 ... 660 million
  • 1970 to 1980 3.69 --> 4.44 ... 750 million
  • 1980 to 1990 4.44 --> 5.29 ... 850 million
  • 1990 to 2000 5.29 --> 6.14 ... 850 million
  • 2000 to 2010 6.14 --> 6.97 ... 830 million
  • 2010 to 2020 6.97 --> 7.82 ... 850 million
