Axios AI+ Summit NY
AXIOS AI EVENT IN NEW YORK ... JULY 5TH 2024 Axios reporters will host multiple fireside chat conversations ![]() Mike Allen ... Axios Co-Founder Peter Burgess COMMENTARY This event was a lot of fun ... but in many ways was very superficial and essentially inconsequential ... it was interesting that tennis legend Maria Sharapova joined the AI+ Summit NYC lineup on June 5, and I was delighted she was on stage, but it raised the question about what AI is being deployed for. In fact it made me think very hard about the priorities of all the decision makers in our modern world because it is very clear that the modern world is very clever but even more it is stupid! The Axios event presentations ended with Signal Foundation's Meredith Whittaker talking with Ina Fried. For me, this was a great conversation because Meredith Whittaker called into question the core foundation of almost everything that the big organizations that dominate AI are doing. On reflection, I realized that my 'choices' since I was a university student were very much aligned with the issues that Meredith Whittaker had identified and was calling attention to in her work. I do not want to be labelled a 'luddite', but a lot ot what AI seems to be capable of seems to be of little importance relative to the totallity of the socio-enciro-economic system. AI seems to be the embodiment of the idea that 'we will know more and more about less and less until we know everything about nothing!' I get invited to a variety of 'events' in and around New York (Washington and Boston) and it is bothering me that many ... in fact nearly all ... of these events seem to operating in an alternative reality from my own. The major decision makers and influencers in the USA seem to have assumed that the world outside the USA is of no consequence whatsoever and that what is good for the elite in the USA is what should be the priority. In my view this is dangerous and will be disastrous sooner rather than later. I came away from the Axios event very happy that I had been able to attend, but deeply depressed that the world of AI at the present time is massively in 'total fail' mode and will accelerate problem growth much more than solutions!
