The climb from Halden to Tistedalen in Norway has long been known as a challenge, especially for freight trains, with its 2.5% gradient.

Even today, helper locomotives are commonly used for freight trains on this stretch.

On this particular day in 2022, El14 2166, the oldest remaining of these locomotives, was stationed in Sarpsborg for helper duty.

I had the privilege of joining Gjermund, the train driver, who had traveled as a passenger on the train from Oslo, on his workday this afternoon.

Join me for this rare opportunity to experience the journey from inside the locomotive.
