AI ... ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Unlocking the Economic Potential of the US Generative AI System Archive: MSFT-US-Generative-AI-Ecosystem-WHITE-PAPER-FINAL-Nov-20-2024.pdf and Original article: https://cdn-dynmedia-1.microsoft.com/is/content/microsoftcorp/microsoft/msc/documents/presentations/CSR/MSFT-US-Generative-AI-Ecosystem-WHITE-PAPER-FINAL-Nov-20-2024.pdf Peter Burgess COMMENTARY I like to joke that AI stands for Augmented Ignorance ... which I do think is half the story about AI. As something of a pioneer in the use of computers for business purposes going back to the 1960s, I am very much aware of the amazing potential of the modern digital economy to do things that were impossible in the analog age! I am not at all sure that many in the modern world have a serious understanding of the meaning of intelligence ... including most of the high profile brainy people involved with AI at its 'cutting edge'. During my lifetime. education has tended more and more to 'specialization' which is reasonable and understandable. For some reason, when I was at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and studying engineering, I started to see that while there was a need for specialization there was also a serious problem with specialization. This was a long time ago ... I matriculated in 1958! In engineering ... things were moving very fast. In my first industrial job, the company's CEO was a Camrbidge engineering graduate and I remember at an engineering department reunion listening to him lambast the academics for their failure to connect industrul and academic progress in an intellectual meaningful way. He pointed out that most academics had little or no idea what was happening in industral research settings and that this needed to change! He was right ... but in fact he did not go far enough! Fortunately in this first industrial job I was able to get some valuable advice from the company's CFO. In retrospect, I think his agenda and mine were very different. He had daughters and wanted them to socialise with university graduates. I needed to leanr a lot more about all the 'realities' of the working world! Neverhteless, he gave me really great advice. He encouraged me to 'broaden' my learning and embrace accounting and managements as subjects to be learned in addition to all the specialities I had studied as an engineering student at univresity. Specifically he pointed at Chartered Accountancy as an essential training for senior work in corporate management! Peter Burgess | |||||||||
According to Google, Artificial intelligence (AI) is a set of technologies that enable computers to perform a variety of advanced functions, including the ability to see, understand and translate spoken and written language, analyze data, make recommendations, and more.
AI is the backbone of innovation in modern computing, unlocking value for individuals and businesses. For example, optical character recognition (OCR) uses AI to extract text and data from images and documents, turns unstructured content into business-ready structured data, and unlocks valuable insights.
