Staples was created with the assistance of a venture capital company called Bain Capital based in Boston and headed at the time by Mitt Romney.
Bain Capital was preceded by an earlier consultancy business Bain & Company that was staffed by people linked in some way with the Harvard Business School. (HBS)
Years before that I was associated with another consultancy firm Management Analysis Center (MAC) that also was linked with HBS. At the time ... this was the late 1960s ... I was employed by a company called Aerosol Techniques Inc (ATI) where I was working on an assignment to get an early mainframe computer (IBM 1401) to do some useful work. Experts from IBM had failed for about two years to make any progress, but my very different approach worked reasonably well. Working with MAC, the IBM computer implementation progress became a 'case study' at the HBS.
Against my own history ... the Bain Capital story explains in large part why the American economy has become very profitable, but delivers rather little 'social satisfaction'!
