CROP AGRICULTURE - GRAIN PRODUCTION
The prairies of the United States and Canada are one of the major grain producing areas in the world. Over the years grain yeilds have increased significantly, but there are worrying trends associated with many yiears of monoculture, high useage of persticides and herbicides and the run-off that creates water pollution.

In 1960 when I was a student I visited Canada and the United States from the UK. Two of us drove a car across Canada from Montreal to Vancouver. I have a strong memory of grain storage elevatorsin every every farming community across the Canadian prairies. I returned to Eastern Canada by Greyhound bus. Then three of us bought a car for $30 in Toronto and headed South to Florida.

In 1978 I was recruited to work on an Agricultural Development Project for the World Bank in India. At the time, the World Bank was funding multiple projects for grain storage infrastructure in the hope that post harvest losses could be substantially reduced.
CROP AGRICULTURE - POST HARVEST GRAIN STORAGE TRADITIONAL VILLAGE GRAIN STORAGE
Traditional grain storage like this is responsible for a large amount of post harvest loss in developing countries. Several decades ago the World Bank had many initiatives to fund grain storage infrsastructure, but much still remains to be done.
In many parts of the developing world, there is very little modern infrastructure for post harvest transport of grain or grain storage. The post harvest losses associated with tradtional storage may be more than 50%. In many parts of Africa food crops are produced on very small farms with very little capacity for substantial productivity improvement in their present form. This is an important challenge to be addressed.

There are a variety of risks associated with the storage of grain. This explosian at a grain elevator killed several people in the United States
For example … in AGRICULTURE ...
better stewardship of WATER use;
… attention to pollution from run-off containing fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, etc;
… more responsible use of animal medication to avoid risk of drug resistance important for human health;
… the issue of worker exploitation and workplace safety;
… and a whole lot more.
CONCLUDING OBSERVATION ... … more than anything else improving the EFFICIENCY of PROCESS will change the trajectory of global socio-enviro-economic performance;
… in the past efficiency has simply been about less COSTS and more PROFIT;
… in the future EFFICIENCY has to be about better QUALITY OF LIFE for PEOPLE with very little of no damage to the ENIRONMENT (PLANET)

Agriculture is one of the biggest and most important sectors in the global economy. Agriculture is vital to produce the FOOD needed to feed the world's population, and at the same time agriculture has a huge impact on all sorts of dimensions of NATURAL CAPITAL ... the use of LAND, the use of WATER, the use of CHEMICAL TOXINS that pollute the environment the killing all sorts of living organisms
ESSENTIALS OF AGRICULTURE
LAND / LABOR / WATER
There have been massive improvements in agricultural productivity over the past many decades as a result of many technological innovations and related investment. There has been increased use of pesticides and fertilizer, there has been mechanization and improvement in seeds.
But there has also been a downside. Monoculture is depleting the soils in an unsusstainable manner. Improved seeds are reducing the resilience of the agricultural system. Run-off containing pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer is draining into watersheds and killing both fauna and flora. Modern agriculture requires heavy capital expenditures and there has been a dangerous concentration of economic power and severe damage to the underlying social fabric.
This image from Ethiopia shows the importance of water, the willingness to work the land ... and the endemic poverty associated with most people engaged in low investment agriculture!

TPB note: My personal experience working in rural areas in many different countries has been that local people have a lot of valuable knowledge much of which has nver been written down and is not available to students and scholars who work primarilly in libraries from books. Merging academic knowledge with practical experience should be one of the priorities of development rather than the prevailing practice of simply trying to replace local indigenous knowledge with simplistic academic knowledge.

AGRICULTURE
Without FOOD, people die. AGRICULTURE is the primary source of FOOD, and therefore vital to the performance of the global socio-enviro-economic system. AGRICULTURE also occupies the largest proportion of LAND, and is associated with the conversion of LAND from natural bio-services to food production.
Agriculture is a key driver of prosperity. Agriculture in the “north” has high yields while in the “south”, too much of agriculture remains little better than subsistence farming with very low yields
